Ten People Smiling

Performance. A collaboration with Vlatka Horvat, First performed at artists space in New York on December 16, 2005, in conjunction with Performa 05, Biennial of Visual Art Performance.

Ten people occupy a gallery space, smiling continually for a period of 60 minutes. Exploring the multiple functions of the smile in social space as an invitation, an expression of pleasure and agreement or approval, as well as an act of submission and a mask, Ten People Smiling isolates and abstracts this commonplace facial gesture to make a subtly interactive and bemusing performative sculpture.
