Erasure

Single-channel video.12 mins. 2003. Performed by Nicholas Cooke.

Shot in a single unedited take, Erasure shows a 16-year-old boy who sits in the woods and recounts his fantasy of disappearing. The piece is part of an ongoing series of monologues-to-camera written and directed by Etchells but performed by different actors who appear to imagine their own futures, successes, deaths or disappearances. Invoking a dream of leading a life that leaves not a trace in the world, Erasure explores notions of presence and absence through the interaction of speaker and text, and through a dynamics between the intricacies of the written language and the intimate, down-played delivery.
