CD-ROMs. 1997 -1999. A collaboration with Hugo Glendinning and Forced Entertainment. Three photographically based CD-ROMs which explore the possibilities of interactive media through the construction of virtual spaces in which disconnected story elements – people and props – are arranged in landscapes for the user to navigate. In place of a rigidly defined game or a single narrative to be discovered, Frozen Palaces and the subsequent projects Nightwalks and Spin invite the user into an experience more akin to that of wandering, of trying out versions of the truth and of making playful connections. The links and routes between the projects’ scenes are geographically incoherent, but poetically charged – taking one through the environment of a house, a desolate night-time cityscape and a car wrecking yard at dusk. Following the links embedded in these landscapes, the user plunges into tunnels of still photographic images and fragmentary texts, which lead ‘out’ to further scenes. Frozen Palaces was published on artintact 5, ZKM—Institute for Visual Media (Karlsruhe, Germany).
